Dr. Xian Wang is a Chinese composer of acoustic and electronic music currently living and working in New York City. Her music can be characterized by its unique use of Chinese musical elements and the interplay of colorful and drama. The music of award winning composer Xian Wang has been played by a variety of international performing ensembles, and has been acclaimed by audiences in Asia, North America and Europe. Her music has been commissioned and performed by some of today’s leading musicians and ensembles including the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York (USA), Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra (China), the Shanghai Opera House Orchestra (China), Klangforum Wien chamber orchestra (Austria), saxophonist Shawn Wallace, the Marc Pekarsky Percussion Ensemble (Russia), University of Michigan's Contemporary Directions Ensemble (USA), and the Philharmonia Orchestra, Concert Orchestra and Chamber Players ensemble at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (USA), PUBLIQuart(USA).
Xian Wang has been awarded prizes in a variety of competitions in China, the United States and abroad. These include the 2nd prize in the 6th Rivers Awards International Composition Competition (awarded by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music) and 3rd prize in the Jurgenson International Composers Competition (Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory). She was also a finalist in the Queen Elizabeth International Music Competition (Belgium). She also is the finalist in 2017 The Thailand International Composition Festival and the winner of the 2017 PQA composer. Her pieces have been broadcast on the Voice of Russia (Russia), Dragon Television (China) and the National Television Station in China, SinoVision (USA) and Chinese American Voice (USA) .
As an electronic musician, Dr. Wang’s has written a variety of fixed, live and improvisatory works. Her recent electronic music is highly interactive, incorporating video and self-designed iOS applications that enhance the expressive nature of her music. Xian Wang is a member of the Cincinnati Composers Laptop Orchestra Project (CiCLOP), where she performs electronic music both in Cincinnati and at electronic music events in the elsewhere in the United States. Her electronic music has been performed in China, France and USA.
Xian Wang holds a bachelors degree in Music Composition and Theory from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in China, where she graduated in 2011. She later went on to earn Master of Music in Composition and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the University of Cincinnati-College Conservatory of Music with a full scholarship. While studying at the College-Conservatory of Music she taught an undergraduate orchestration class, a special topics class on contemporary music from East Asian countries and composition lessons to non-major music students. Her principal teachers have included Douglas Knehans, Mara Helmuth and Ye Guohui.
Dr. Wang is also the founder of the New York New Fusion Music Festival. The purpose of the concert is to celebrate the fusion of Western and Eastern music.
